M.S.S.A Chess Tournament
Posted in School on September 15, 2007 by ShilpaI like chess a lot and am in the school team. We all participated in the M.S.S.A (Mumbai School Sports Assosciation) Chess Tournament. It took place in Dadar. The tournament was from Tuesday, September 11 to Friday, September 14. I was participating in Under-14 Girls, and it was on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. We had to be at school by 7am; the school was providing transport by bus. The tournament started at 8.30am and ended at around 4.30 to 5pm. I awoke sleepily at 6am all three days and my driver drove me to school. The bus was hot and it had completely no air-conditioning. I can’t say I hadn’t been expecting it and felt inclined to complain. We arrived at 8.30 sharp and I checked out the place. It was pathetic, to say the least. There was only a hot, stuffy raised platform for everyone to sit; covered by a roof of cloth. None of us wanted to sit there; we were sweating. The place was littered and habitable to flies and mosquitoes; but certainly not to humans. There were sweet wrappings, chewing gums, and chocolates and paper plates lying around, unattended to. I hated that place. On with the tournament! There were three matches taking place over the three days; nine matches in total. I won my first two; I was elated. However, I lost the third. But I went home, feeling good, as I had performed well on my first day of my first chess tournament. The next day, I had a draw, won one, and lost one. My score was now 3.5 out of 6. The final day, I won one, lost one, and my last round was a walkover. A point just given to me! My final score was 5.5 out of 9. I thought that was pretty good for my first tournament. The highest score in our school was a boy who had got 6 out of 9. I made up my mind to do better in my next match….and I WLL!
Bon Voyage!!
Chess
Posted in Poems on September 15, 2007 by ShilpaChess is a wonderful game,
Which can sometimes be a very big pain.
We have to concentrate and think,
We could sometimes be distracted by a wink!
Let me tell you a little about this game,
With its unbelieveably simple aim!
It’s about eight Pawns who sacrifice themselves fearlessly,
For the King they love so dearly.
There are two Knights in shining armour,
Who are not at all like mere farmers.
Two Bishops who attack left and right,
The black ones capture the whites!
Don’t forget the two Rooks; so majestic and strong,
They never do anything wrong.
The Queen is the ultimate piece,
She never gives her enemy peace.
The King is the coward of the board,
He just waits at the back; looking bored.
The excitement heightenes when,
The King is at the gate,
And there happens a check mate!
I guess what I’m trying to show is,
When you play this game, you can’t miss,
It’s all really a war,
Which some people think is a bore,
But I think it’s from the days of yore.

Eldest-The Second Book of Inheritance by Christopher Paolini
Posted in Book Reviews on September 10, 2007 by Shilpa
This is the second book in Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance trilogy; a sequel to Eragon. Eragon and Saphira, his sapphire coloured dragon, have to travel to Ellesmera, the elf city, to complete their training. The elves have guarded Du Weldenvarden with such secrecy, so Galbatorix cannot find them or wage a war against them. Arya, the elf, and Orik, the dwarf, travel with them, too. The four of them successfully reach Ellesmera, where Eragon and Saphira find out that they’re not the only Rider and Dragon! There is just one Dragon and his Rider remaining; the elf, Oromis, and his dragon, Glaedr. Eragon’s knowledge of the ancient language increases and his reading and writing skills are greatly improved by Oromis. Saphira learns how to do a great many stunts in the air from Glaedr. Meanwhile, in Carvahall, Galbatorix wants to capture Roran, Eragon’s cousin, to interrogate him about Eragon; or hold him hostage. He sends the Ra’zac and some of his soldiers to capture Roran. Carvahall, unexpectedly, puts up a strong defence, inspired by Roran. A few battles take place and Carvahall wins all of them. Katrina, who is engaged to Roran, is captured by the Ra’zac. Roran convinces most of the villagers to leave Carvahall, travel through the Spine, and reach Surda; to join the Varden. In Teirm, a city, Roran finds out that Eragon is a Rider! He is astonished, shocked and angry because he feels Eragon is the cause of Garrow’s death. Deep down, he also feels glad that his cousin is alive.Meanwhile, the Varden are being confronted by war by Galbatorix’s army. Nasuada, newly appointed leader of the Varden, after her father’s death, is worried that Galbatorix might be present, meaning instant death for them all. Fortune smiles upon the Varden; Eragon and Saphira reach a few days prior to the battle. During the battle, a new, mysterious Rider battles Eragon. He is definetly not Galbatorix. Who is he?…Who is the mysterious new Rider? Is Eragon able to defeat him? Do the Varden win the battle? Do Roran and the villagers reach the Varden unscathed? Read the book to find out!!
This book was as good as the first one! A lot of information was revealed in this book. I got to know more about dwarf clans and elven customs. It was really very interesting. The only thing I found a little boring was the long winded explainantions. I think that the author should have shortened those a bit. Well, anyway, I am eagerly waiting for the third, final and last book to be released!! You can be sure I’ll be the first one to lay my hands on it!!
My Sister
Posted in Poems on September 8, 2007 by ShilpaMy sister is the most caring sister you will ever find,
She does not drill holes in my mind.
She always watches out for me,
Without asking for any kind of fee.
I respect her a lot,
Even when I was in my cot!
If I ever need her help,
I only have to yelp.
Sister dear,
Never fear,
I’m always there for you.
I know you’re there for me as well,
You’ll never let me go to hell,
Even if I’m not behaving well.
You’re my one and only sister,
I’ll never let you be a spinster.
Love and cherish you always; I shall,
I know you’ll do the same.
My Brother
Posted in Poems on September 8, 2007 by ShilpaMy brother is a very sweet boy. He is only six years old. He likes to watch a television show called Power Rangers and often tries to enact the stunts in front of me! He is also very naughty and noisy, and so I get angry with him. But, five minutes later, we are best friends again! I have written this poem to express my love for my dear brother.
My brother is so cute,
His voice is like a flute!
He sounds so nice,
Chattering like three mice!
On Siblings’ Day,
He gave me flowers,
Along with his Ninja Powers!
With his gentle touch,
He shows he loves me very much!
Often he is naughty,
And sometimes very haughty.
He is often noisy,
So I get very angry!
Then, he goes to a corner,
Sobbing that he’s a goner.
Later, I feel sorry,
And everything is hunky-dory!
And forever,
My brother he will be,
Whom I will love and cherish,
For all eternity.
My Favourite Subjects
Posted in Poems, School on September 7, 2007 by ShilpaEnglish is the best,
- All among the rest!
Chemistry is about chemicals,
- While maths is about decimals.
Geography is so boring,
- I often find myself snoring…..
Biology is about cells,
- Does that ring a bell?
So now you know why,
- And you know I don’t lie,
About loving studies!
